COW/CALF MANAGEMENT Minimizing Calving Difficulty in Beef Cattle
نویسنده
چکیده
Calving difficulty (dystocia) contributes heavily to losses in production in beef cow/calf herds. The obvious losses are due to calves or cows that die at or soon after calving. Less noticeable losses are due to delayed rebreeding, more open females, an extended calving season and increased labor costs. While occasional dystocia is almost unavoidable, through proper management, cattlemen can minimize dystocia. Both genetics and environment (nutrition) must be controlled to minimize dystocia.

producers. This loss is estimated at $750 million annually nationwide. Calving difficulty increases calf death loss, cow mortality, labor and veterinary costs; it delays the return of cows to estrus and reduces conception rates. It also lowers calf weaning weight and market value, which results from breeding of young heifers and cows to easy calving bulls to reduce calving difficulty. Studies s...

The purpose of this review is to define possible breeding objectives for Southern African beef cattle farmers and to review different means of expressing genetic reproductive merit. The breeding objective considered was to maximize the number of calves born or weaned for a given number of cows in a herd under prevailing environmental and management conditions. This is a complex trait that has m...

Genetic evaluations provide information to aid in breeding decisions that increase long-term performance of animals and herds. However, to date no study has been undertaken to investigate the accuracy of the Irish maternal genetic evaluations in beef cattle. The objective, therefore, of this study was to quantify the relationship between phenotypic performance and measures of genetic merit for ...

Reproductive competence is one of the most important components in the overall management of a cow-calf operation. The ability to maintain a 365-day calving interval in a high percentage of the females influences the profitability of all breeding operations. In most cases, low reproductive efficiency can be directly linked to the nutritional status of the animal(s). Research has shown that poor...
متن کاملCow-calf reproductive, genetic, and nutritional management to improve the sustainability of whole beef production systems.
Optimizing efficiency in the cow-calf sector is an important step toward improving beef sustainability. The objective of the study was to use a model to identify the relative roles of reproductive, genetic, and nutritional management in minimizing beef production systems' environmental impact in an economically viable, socially acceptable manner. An economic and environmental diet optimizer was...
